Awarded: Best Market Share Growth by Design
Ergonomidesign is proud to announce that they, along with MAQUET Critical Care, have won the gold award in one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions, Design of the Decade. The ‘Design Contribution to Market Share Growth’ award was given for the project ‘SERVO-i’, an intensive care ventilator designed for MAQUET. Its user-centred design and high-quality performance have led to SERVO-i becoming recognised as the benchmark ventilator for the industry.

The Design of the Decade 2000-2009 celebrates the importance of industrial design through innovation, excellence and business success. By closely examining a product over a given time period, one can understand and appreciate the impact industrial design has on industry and society. The Swedish design consultancy Ergonomidesign was awarded the gold award for ‘Design's Contribution to Market Share Growth’. The SERVO-i ventilator is a good example of the great potential that a product’s design can have on business. Another example is the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier, which gave Ergonomidesign a silver award 10 years ago in Design of the Decade, and it is still a global sales success.

The Servoi team: Daniel Höglund, Christer Ström, Anders Aust, David Crafoord and Thomas Nilsson.

“Ergonomidesign’s strategic decision was to focus on the different users of a ventilation system. We used our renowned user-centred design process to create the safest and most user-friendly ventilator on the market to enable our client to increase its sales. The SERVO-i was designed to be easy to use and to understand, with a focus on making the interface simple and accessible. A lot of effort was made to make the whole ventilator less intimidating than comparable solutions for health care professionals, patients and visitors. We also focused on creating a design that made the process of moving the patient much faster and safer. Winning a gold award in Design of the Decade is proof of SERVO-i’s impact on the life science industry,” says Director of Product Design at Ergonomidesign, David Crafoord.

When the SERVO-i ventilator was launched in 2001, it was the first system that was designed to fit in intensive care units. The primary focus of the design was the needs and demands of the various users. The team at Ergonomidesign started the design process by carrying out user studies throughout the world to gain extensive knowledge of how ventilator systems were used in different countries. They identified several problems with existing ventilators: they were too technical, offered limited access to the patient, had intimidating user interfaces and were difficult to transport, which affected the patient’s health.

The award is presented by the Industrial Designers of America (IDSA). Founded in 1965, IDSA is the world’s oldest, largest, member-driven society for product design, industrial design, interaction design, human factors, ergonomics, design research and design management, including design and design-related fields.
