Injection Pen for Nycomed: Inclusive Design Turn Stereotypes Upside Down

The Preotact injection pen for treating osteoporosis is an example of how inclusive design can enlarge the group of potential users. Ergonomidesign knew from experience that people with weaker hands and fingers have problems using their top triggered injection devices. Osteoporosis patients are mainly older women, many of which also are diagnosed with arthritis. Early in the process, we realised that in order to include as many potential users as possible, we need to find a more user friendly design solution.....

Airline companies operate in a hypercompetitive market with total price transparency and slim margins. Needless to say, SAS is under constant pressure to find new ways to cut costs, increase revenue and differentiate offerings.

Ergonomidesign has helped SAS to set up a cross-functional and multidisciplinary innovation team. One of the first projects the team undertook was to streamline the check-in process for business travellers.

Ejendals asked Ergonomidesign to review the entire product line for protective gloves for professional users. This market segment is under severe price pressure and existing products are typically undifferentiated.

Ergonomidesign created three distinct product groups to create greater differentiation and highlight key product benefits. Since the relaunch of the Tegera brand in 2005, Ejendals has sold over 500.000 pairs of gloves.

Smoke detectors work well but are cumbersome to install and often quite ugly. OG Invent developed Snapalarm, a user-friendly and attractive smoke detector that can be easily attached to the cord of a pendant lamp.

The aim is to encourage the homeowner to install several detectors, preferably one in each room, to increase security. In 2005, OG Invent sold 25,000 units in thirteen countries. The sales target for 2006 is 150,000 units.

Once the preserve of athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, sportswear and expedition gear have become mainstream fashion statements. But one of the few remaining holdouts is the bulky, ill-fitting and downright ugly lifejacket.

In 2001, Sail Racing launched a safe and stylish flotation vest that people would feel comfortable wearing both at sea and on land. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and by now most competitors sell vests that look suspiciously similar.

Every year some 100,000 pedestrians in Northern Europe suffer injuries due to slipping in snowy or icy conditions. Ergonomidesign has developed a shoe concept called Gecco with integrated anti-skid studs in the sole.

Users can easily change the shoe’s status from active (exposed studs) to passive (hidden studs) without bending down or using their hands. The market potential is huge; over 25 million people live in Scandinavia alone.

The first bike handles from the RTI-Sports brand Ergon were launched in 2004. Despite the fact that they are quite costly compared to competing handles, RTI-Sports sell more than 50,000 pairs per year.

In 1978, Bahco and Ergonomidesign discovered that craftsmen at work commonly use both hands to tighten a screw. User tests showed that efficiency would be improved by 70 percent if the screwdriver handle enabled a two-hand grip.

The first so-called Ergo screwdriver was launched in 1982 and was followed by other hand-held tools such as chisels, pliers, knives, saws, paint scrapers and adjustable spanners. More than 1.5 million Ergo screwdrivers were sold in 2004.

A fact commonly regarded as a problem when applying graphics to a bottle is dealing with the optical effects of a bottle filled with liquid. The design team at Ergonomidesign looked at the problem from another angle - as a challenging opportunity. Instead of designing a solution adapted to the limitations, they came up with an innovative design for the iconic ABSOLUT bottle. The result is a design that expresses the complexity and richness of mango flavour, using optical effects to enhance product experience and to make the product stand out in a crowd.

The supercar with the north European personality is the brainchild of Swedish entrepreneur Christian von Koenigsegg. Koeningsegg gave design partner Ergonomidesign a simple brief: speed. The result was the fastest series production car in the world allowed on ordinary roads. The Guinness Book of World Records hailed the Koenigsegg “the world’s most powerful production car”. The design philosophy is unmistakably dynamic and organic. And the key to the car’s unrivalled aerodynamics.

Ergonomidesign developed a new, ergonomically improved tea and coffee pot for SAS Airlines in the mid 1980s. The previous pot used for in-flight service was too heavy which caused RSI in cabin crew. Designed to achieve the optimal distance between the flight attendant’s wrist and centre of gravity, the SAS pot has proved a huge success. Over 500,000 have now been made and sales continue to grow. 33 airlines now use the pot. Check it out next time you take to the air.

New perspectives: A feeling for China

Ergonomidesign is on a fact finding mission in China in the beginning of March. Fifteen staff, a quarter of the workforce is, together with the Swedish Export Council, visiting different production facilities to get an insight into what it's like on the Chinese factory floor in Shanghai, Ningbo, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. For Ergonomidesign it's about being a credible dialogue partner in client discussions and understanding the issues faced by clients who have all or part of their production in China, in everything from high technology facilities to plastic industries.

The trip has three main purposes. Firstly, gaining knowledge about different production facilities – how they work and where they are. Here the company is aiming to get a broad first-hand understanding of production in China. Secondly, but just as important the plan is to explore other aspects of Chinese production from environmental aspects through to working conditions. A third issue is to study consumer behavior and users in one of the world's largest economies.

"Our aim is to refine our methods within areas like environmental consequences and ethics, areas that are increasingly becoming competitive advantage factors. Our trip to China is a first step in building a greater and more tangible understanding of these issues in a global perspective," says Marcus Gabrielsson.

By seeing with our own eyes what the production is like in China our employees will get a hands-on feeling for the Chinese market – both in terms of production and consumption.

"Our assignments are all about adding value; creating competitive advantages for the products and services in context. So it's obvious to also look at more general issues related to production. A lot of the world's production today takes place in China, which means we have to be able to relate to local conditions. What are the environmental consequences of choosing certain materials and components? How are they produced and how are they transported? I believe it's important to experience things in person to be able to relate to these issues," says Marcus Gabrielsson just back from a year in Hong Kong.

Ergonomidesign is aiming to strengthen its presence in Hong Kong in 2007, and the journey to China is organized in collaboration with the Swedish Export Council.

This year Ergonomidesign brings home five of the sought-after and prestigious red dot awards. The red dot design award was founded in 1955 by The German Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, which is one of Europe's oldest and most renowned design institutions. Today, the prize is an indication of high quality and innovative thinking. Amongst other things, the jurors judge innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics and the products life-span. Every year, the organization acknowledges outstanding design in the categories of product design, communication design and design concept. Ergonomidesign is granted the awards for 3M Speedglass, BABYBJÖRN Travel Cot Light, Bahco Japanese pull-saw, Bosieboo Bath Thermometer and Ejendals Tegera PRO. The Tegera PRO glove received the highest distinction, the best of the best award, and is one of only 43 products to receive the prize this year.

On October 17th, Roger L. Martin, appointed Innovation guru by the magazine Business Week in 2005, and Daniel Sachs, CEO of investment firm Proventus, spoke at the yearly Ergonomidesign Event on the topic of “Business Design”. The speakers guided us through the reasons for why integrated design thinking - business design - in processes, product development and management will sharpen the edge of your business in order to make it more competitive in the global economy.
The event was very successful and well visited, and we hope that it inspired people to start thinking about the value of using creative methods and design processes in everyday business decision making.

Below are some pictures of the event. Look out for next year’s exciting conference topic in a couple of months!

Brio teams up with Ergonomidesign

BRIO, the world-renowned Swedish manufacturer of toys and prams, is seeing a huge increase in interest because of recently implemented strategy changes. The venerable company has gained a new and forward- looking leadership with an agenda which promises to revive lagging sales and revitalize a brand image which used to be somewhat antiquated.

The toy market is challenged by increasingly tough conditions in this day and age of economic globalism. Intense competition, relentless price cutting and changing consumption patterns are all factors which can obliterate all but the strongest players. In order to cope with this situation, the new BRIO has recently deployed a restructuring plan, where non-core parts of the company have been disposed of. The major thrust, though, is targeted at improving the bottom line through aggressive product development and brand-building.

In this context, BRIO has entered a long-term relationship with Ergonomidesign. Claes von Hauswolff, BRIO Director of Branding, says:
"BRIO's new product development is focused on providing parents with products that support a modern family lifestyle. But modern families have demands; while they expect quality and beauty, they also want products that take the stress out of modern family life. This is why we aim for Design with Content, where we combine aesthetics and functionality. And it's because of this that Ergonomidesign, with their proven track record of developing designs with this very combination, is one of the companies we have selectively picked to help us create these products."

Ergonomidesign is proud to be able to assist in the rejuvenation of the classic BRIO brand.

New products: Multifunctional knives from Hultafors

The classic worktool brand Hultafors (established in 1883) has commissioned Ergonomidesign to develop a series of innovative workman's knives. The basic idea is based on the fact that workmen in many professions use knives, but in their own distinct ways, and many times in ways which the knives really weren't designed for. The painter might use the knive as a scredriwer in order to remove electrical sockets from walls, or to bend open the lid of a can of paint; the electrician will use the knife to peel of the outer protective layer of electrical cabling. Realising that there was an unsatisfied need here, we designed a series of knives which offer build-in added functionality in a number of different ways. All the knives still function perfectly as knives, but they are also, respectively, a screwdriver or a rasp or a chisel, for example.
Adding functionality to a simple tool could also add complexity, but
in this case, the knives still employ a single blade, with no extra
mechanics involved, allowing for simple, straightforward handling and a very affordable retail price.

New awards: Tegera Pro-glove behind the Marketers of the Year

The cooperation with Leksand based company Ejendals is the latest in a row of successful assignments for Ergonomidesign. On October 19th Ejendals were named Marketers of the Year for the launch of Tegera Pro – the protective glove developed by Ergonomidesign – by the Swedish Marketing Federation.

A complex process, involving scrupulous analysis and studies of users, is necessary to transform an ordinary work glove into an ergonomic and functional tool. The glove protects against the external elements while it increases the mobility and use of the fingers and the wrist. The ergonomic functions of the glove are unique and so is the demand.

Awards: Function Rules to represent Swedish Book Art 2006

The book about Ergonomidesign - Function Rules - has been selected to represent Swedish Book Art 2006. The organisation Swedish Book Art has been working for increased quality in book making for over 70 years and each year the jury selects 25 books as good examples of fine book making. The book about Ergonomidesign is one of those selected in the competition for 2006. The purpose of the yearly Swedish Book Art Contest is to stimulate the book making sector to strive for a high standard.

According to Swedish Book Art typography is a way of communicating. Therefore, the typography shouldn't be a barrier between the text and the reader. The number one priority should be to ensure that a book is readable. Other criteria the judges consider are the length of the lines, that line spacing should be thought through and that there should be balance between text and white areas. Not to forget, a well chosen font, an even print, good paper and quality binding. As Swedish Book Art puts it:

"Book art is the art of creating a graphic form that transfers the content of a book to its reader in a nice and pleasant way. It's all about the invisible beauty and laws of least resistance: a readable book is a beautiful book.”

Business Design: Ergonomidesign travels to the USA together with leading Nordic design consultants

Ergonomidesign is one of 20 representatives from Sweden traveling to the United States in mid February in order to increase the interchange between the Swedish and American design sectors.
−To use design as a strategic business driver is a great deal more common in the US – there are many examples from large consumer corporations like Proctor & Gamble to heavier industry players like General Electrics. Ergonomidesign is somewhat of a pioneer in this area in Sweden. In the US there is generally a much broader acceptance for our way of thinking in a number of sectors and industries. In addition, to know the American market and understand how it works is equally important for Ergonomidesign because our customers and products are global, says Krister Torssell MD at Ergonomidesign.

Ergonomidesign is participating in two seminars in New York; “Building Competencies" and "Innovation by Design":
"Building Competencies”
During the seminar “Building Competencies”, held in New York 16-17 February, Swedish and Finnish design companies are meeting with American colleagues to exchange experiences on design as well as discuss design consultancy business issues.
"Innovation by Design”
An open symposium, taking place on the 16 Febraury at the MoMA, Museum of Modern Art, in New York, will focus on design from a business perspective.
