EzyStove - A Sustainable Cooking Solution
With passion, courage, sweat and some tears we co-developed the cheap, very easy to produce and vastly efficient EzyStove with our African friends through numerous optimizing iterations.
It all began in the dry savanna of Namibia. Rainfall is scarce, droughts common and extreme floods more and more frequent. Since the independence of Namibia in 1990, logging of trees is restricted due to the sensitivity of ecosystems and woodlands. Trees are harder and harder to find, people are spending hours to find wood and they even have to dig for root systems to burn. Trees are important providers of shelter, housing, medicine, and energy. As many as 74% of the rural households and 40% of the urban households in Namibia still rely primarily on wood as fuel for cooking. The cutting of trees has reached alarming situations of deforestation resulting in widespread desertification. Furthermore, the widespread use of wood for open fire cooking is polluting the atmosphere, and the smoke of the open fires creates dangerous soot and gases during cooking in the huts. This is contributing vastly to ill health and high emissions of CO² and other greenhouse gases. We set out to find a simple yet effective solution to improve health conditions, time consumption and the environment, while also empowering our Namibian friends. We succeeded!
By a design patented inner chamber that traps the heat and insulates it from the surroundings, the EzyStove reduces the amount of wood needed and the emissions of CO² by 40% and other toxic gases by 70%, compared with a traditional fire. The outer exoskeleton creates a strong long lasting barrier and protection from the intense heat, while enabling any type of pot or pan to be used. EzyStove significantly reduces harmful smoke and wood consumption and cooks your meal faster. People love the stove. A lot. And the environment could not agree more.
Who thought you could deliver an efficient stove in a flat package? We did. By challenging our designers and engineers, we set out to create the "easiest to make" stove. Ever. It comes from the factory as five flat sheet metal panels, a few bent steel rods and some rivets. Basically any small local workshop can put it together without advanced tools and the manufacturing of the stove creates local jobs. It sells at a price that is affordable to even the poorest households.
